My name is Aaron and I live in South Thomaston just outside Rockland. I own a cleaning and restoration company and drive a cab a couple nights a week. I've been a truck driver, and a flight instructor. I run several online forums for motorscooters and am always tinkering on some old two wheeled wreck be it a bicycle or a motorcycle.

Now, back to archery. I have two boys and they are in Cub Scouts. We went to Camp Hinds this summer for a wekend and got to shoot some very light glass recurves. Kids and I had a blast. My neighbor is a Hunter (I have no time since high school) and has a compound bow. I tried that out and it was cool but not what I was looking for. I am old school at heart. I have tinkered with blacksmithing, drive Model T Fords at the Owls Head Museum like old bikes and so on. Longbows are what interest me. Maybe a recurve but not as excited as when I see a nice Longbow. So I Googled Traditional Archery in Maine and here I am. Hope to find some people near me that might have some time to teach me a bit and give me advice on what I should get for a starter bow and gear. There is a great Archery shop here in Rockland but mostly modern bows. They sell recurves and longbows though. I am hoping to eventually learn to make a bow and would love to visit someone that does and see one in progress.

Thanks!

Aaron

Welcome Aaron!

A couple of us live in the area. I live in Appleton and a few other members are in the immediate area as well (Rockland, Warren).

Do you happen to clean the Samoset Timeshares? If so, I believe I know you....

Glad you found the site!!

Cheers,
-jeff

Aaron, welcome!!

I'm up the road a ways, in Carmel. I have a small assortment of longbows that you are free to come up and shoot, as long as you're right-handed. Also, Old Town Archery is a dealer for Howard Hill longbows. They can order any of the bows Craig makes, at the same price you'd see on the hill website.

E-mail me at rodmaker@roadrunner.com if you can make it up.

Take care,

Kevin

Thanks all for the welcomes and I am right handed. I'd love to come out and shoot with you guys. Now I gotta Google Carmel and see how far it is. Jeff say Hi next time you see me so I know who you are. I am the guy that cleans the carpets at the Samoset. The big ugly fat guy with the gotee. Very Happy

Couple questions maybe?

I held a tape measure in my left hand and drew the tape back to my cheek with my right as though I was sighting an arrow. Measured 28/29". I'm 5'10" and fairly strong. What am I looking for in a bow? Won't be hunting with it but I like to push limits as I improve when target shooting so I'd like a bow capable of a little range.

So what length, draw, and weight bow should I be looking for? Right now I can't buy more than one so it will need to "grow" with me for awhile before I can acquire another.

Have any of you made your own longbow or selfbow?

Aaron

Hey Aaron,

Well, I'm the guy that paints the units prior to your cleaning... sound familiar?

Cheers,
Jeff

Yep, you got it!! Good ol Maintenance week!!

I have a Horne's Brush Bow, which is a longbow. I've also got a recurve on order with Craig Warren which I'm extremely excited about. I have a couple other bows that I don't shoot as often, if you'd like to give one a try I have a Jeffrey Archery recurve and a couple other longbows....

Glad you found the site!!

Cheers,
-jeff

Jeff thanks I may just take you or Kevin up on the offer. Longbows seem to run about $500 and up new so I definately want to do some homework before I buy one.

Aaron,
Keep an eye out for used custom bows. I have a bad addiction to trying every different bow I can and trade 4-6 a year, so they are definitely out there. Plus, once you've shot a few different types and know what you like, then you can really narrow it down. They usually go for 50-70% the cost of the same bow new, sometimes even less. definitely a good deal for the amount of work involved.

Got it. Just let me know when you're coming up and we'll see what's going on./ Expanded archery for deer starts tomorrow and I've been invited to hunt a new place in outer Bangor. Sundays will probably be better, but you never know. Just give me a call and we'll set something up.
