Hey Canerod,
I live up on Rte 5 in Rumford Point on the way to Andover. I have been shooting a bow for about a year and practice everyday. I started off with a 45# PSA Heritage Classic longbow. I shot that for the winter and this spring bought a second hand Byron Ferguson Bear Patriot longbow and enjoy the extra poundage and speed. I just ordered a 60# Howard Hill "Wesley Special" (guess my girlfriends engagement ring will have to wait!!!!!!!!!) I just started making my own arrows and really have the bug!!
I am a plaster contractor and do restoration, veneer plaster and some new stuff called earth plaster. I was doing a job near Gardiner and stopped in at the archery shop. I saw a guy shooting a longbow. His name was Wayne and he was shooting a Howard Hill custom bow. He was kind enough to let me shoot it and I knew I had to have one!! He was great to talk to and gave me all kinds of pointers and advice, I think he is a MTA member.
I went to this years Poke and Hope and had a great time. Just a great bunch of guys and a great atmosphere.

Great!! I have a new-to-me (read used) Hill coming that just shipped out today. Make plenty of room, they're addictive, lol. Glad you're shooting a bunch and having fun with it, that's the key. Ain't nothing as mesmerizing as watching the flight of an arrow, IMO.
Keep posting and let me know if you get up towards Bangor at all. I'm right outside of Bangor in Carmel and I'm always looking for new folks to shoot with.

hey canerod,
Now that I have ordered the "wesley special" I would like to start making some arrows.
I have been shooting easton legacy shafts through my #50 pound Bear Patriot.
Do you know what I would use for my howard hill WS #60lb? It will be 68 inches long and I have a 29 inch draw.
Thanks!

ERA,
If the Hill is 60#@28 and you draw 29", then you'll probably be shooting a 30" shaft at 63#. Hills generally like a stiffer shaft, from what shooting I have done with them. I'd say start with 70-75 or 75-80# shafts and play with the length and tip weight to tune them. I's start full-length and have a variety of field tip weights, from 125gr to 160gr. By gradually trimming the length and trying different weight field tips, you should be able to get it in tune pretty easily.
I'm sure there is someone on here with a bit more experience with tuning than I. Hopefully, they'll speak up and give you some good info. Another good source of info is the Howard Hill Longbowmen, a message list devoted to Hill bows and shooting. go to www.howardhillshooters,com and register. Bob Wesley, Hill's friend who the Wesley Special is named after, is a frequent poster there and you can't do much better for advice.
Hope this helps a bit,
Kevin |

Hey Canerod,
I sure appreciate the info and links.
My girlfriends parents live in Winterport and I am sure we will be going up there soon. I will contact you and do some shooting.
Thanks again,
ERA

| Give me a yell when you know you're coming up there. I'm only 20 minutes or so from Winterport, just head up Rt 69 to Carmel. |
